What are Non-NHS Services?
Non-NHS or private services are requests for medical reports, letters, certificates or examinations that fall outside the services covered by the NHS general practice contract. These may include insurance reports, driving licence medicals, private letters, occupational health requests, and similar.
Because this work takes the GP and practice staff away from NHS-contracted services, a fee is normally charged for time, expertise and administrative processing.
When will a fee apply?
-
If you ask the GP to complete a form or report for an insurance company, employer, school/college, travel provider or third party, this is usually non-NHS work.
-
If the GP is asked to certify your fitness for HGV/PSV/taxi driving, or complete a DVLA medical, that is also likely non-NHS work.
-
Note: The GP is not obliged to undertake non-NHS work. The decision rests with the doctor.
How to request a non-NHS service
-
Complete the non-NHS/Private Work Request Form (available at the practice reception) or send the request via Online Traige Request through practice website.
-
Provide proof of identity (e.g., passport, UK driving licence, BRP) — see below for verification.
-
Submit your completed form, ID documents and payment of the applicable fee in advance.
-
Once payment and identity checks are completed, the practice will process your request. Please note that turnaround times may vary depending on complexity and workload.
Proof of Identity
In order to comply with data protection and medical confidentiality requirements, we will ask for one of the following:
-
Valid UK passport
-
UK driving licence (full or provisional)
-
UK biometric residence permit or residence card
-
Birth certificate and change-of-name documentation (if applicable)
-
Evidence of current address
If submitting on behalf of someone else (for example a child or person who has died) you must also provide evidence of your authority to act.

Processing Times & Important Notes
-
Once we have received all the required documentation, payment and identity verification, we aim to complete most simple letters/reports within four weeks. Complex reports may take longer (up to 6weeks) depending on the amount of information required.
-
No refund policy: Once the practice has started work on a request, the fee cannot be refunded. By submitting the request you confirm you accept this.
-
Amendments: If you require changes to a completed report or letter, additional fees will apply. We will always notify you of any extra cost before proceeding.
-
The GP will only sign or confirm what is known to be accurate and documented in the medical record. Any incomplete or inaccurate information may cause delays or refusal.
How to Pay
Payments should be made via credit/debit card or BACS transfer. We accept cash at the reception for non-NHS work too. We do not accept cheques. Please ensure payment is cleared before services commence.
Privacy, Confidentiality & Data Protection
All non-NHS work is handled in accordance with GDPR and the Data Protection Act. Medical records remain confidential. By submitting a request you give consent for the practice to release the required information to the third party or yourself as specified.
Questions?
If you are unsure whether the work you require falls under “Non-NHS services”, or you’d like a fee estimate for a particular report, please contact our practice reception with your request details and we will be happy to advise.
